Enemies of the free state: Montana lawmaker claims Constitution calls for shooting and jailing socialists – Washington Examiner

State Rep. Rodney Garcia stated Saturday he was stressed about socialists “entering our federal government” prior to saying the Constitution requires shooting or imprisoning them.

“So really in the Constitution of the United States, [, if] they are condemned of being a socialist member, you either go to prison or are shot,” Garcia said, according to the Billings Gazette.

A Republican lawmaker in Montana stated he thinks the U.S. Constitution permits the shooting or jailing of individuals who identify as socialists.

Garcia might not point to where in the Constitution it said socialists could be jailed or shot. When he was asked to clarify if he thought it was a suitable reaction to a person being a socialist, he stated yes.

He added, “I concur with my Constitution. That’s what makes us free. We’re not a democracy, we’re a Republic Constitution.”

The Montana Republican Party knocked Garcia’s comments.

Garcia’s challenger in the 2018 election, Amelia Marquez, recognized herself as a democratic socialist and stated her political views align with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has actually also referred to himself as a democratic socialist.

“The Montana Republican Party completely condemns the comment that was made and under no circumstance is violence versus someone with opposing political views appropriate,” stated Spenser Merwin, the Montana GOP executive director. “It’s frustrating that this separated incident removed from the weekend’s events, which showcased the strength of our statewide candidates and the importance of the upcoming election.”

“They’re opponents of the free state,” Garcia stated. “What do we make with our opponents in war? In Vietnam, Afghanistan, all those. What did we do?”
