National Board Of Review picks The Irishman as the years best film – The A.V. Club

Put on your golden Oscar hat and prepare to grumble about snubs and flubs: It’s formally Awards Season, the happiest time of the year– or a minimum of it is for the individuals who win awards and those people who appreciate the clothing that celebrities endure the various red carpets. The National Board Of Review kicked things off this morning with a magnificent gala event that was actually a thrilling e-mail press release, announcing the winners of its numerous year-end awards in a streamlined and very clever method that conserves us from needing to sit through any boring speeches (the Academy Awards ceremony is a fun program, but we ‘d all be better if they just sent an email ahead of time that noted all of the winners).

Anyhow, the awards themselves will be distributed at an actual gala occasion in January, but let’s carry on to who’s winning those awards. As spoiled by the headline, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman was named the very best Film of 2019, with NBR President Annie Schulhof describing the movie as a “skillful mob legendary” that is a “rich, moving, perfectly textured motion picture that represents the finest in what movie theater can be.” Scorsese, Robert De Niro, and Al Pacino also received the organizations first-ever Icon Award, acknowledging both the success of their particular professions and just how excellent The Irishman was (no love for Joe Pesci, apparently).
