SoCal storm: Heavy rain, snow leave path of destruction, prompting flooding and road closures – KABC-TV

LOS ANGELES (KABC)– A significant storm knocked the Southland Thursday,
shutting down major highways while falling trees, prompting serious flooding and wreaking havoc on streets.

Spread light rain and showers fell in the Los Angeles location by late Christmas afternoon, but the brunt of the storm struck about 9 p.m. Wednesday and was expected to continue through early afternoon Thursday. A winter storm warning stays in effect up until 10 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

In Woodland Hills, where 2.39 inches of rain fell, a big tree uprooted beyond an apartment or condo complex. The tree damaged the entryway of the structure and obstructed all lanes of Burbank Boulevard.

The winter storm may have likewise triggered a tree in Lynwood to come crashing down on 2 families’ houses in Lynwood.

“About 2, 3 in the morning, it was raining pretty hard at the time. When I heard the loud noise if it was lightning or an automobile crash, not sure. When I stepped outside, I was able to see a huge tree on top of my house,” property owner Andy Cisneros said.

A girl was sleeping in her bedroom where the tree struck the other home.

“My child was sleeping in the space and it simply boiled down,” property owner Saul Zavala said. “Right now, it’s being held up by the neighbor and the gate’s car.”

No injuries were reported in the Woodland Hills or Lynwood events.

Burn locations were cautioned to prepare for possible flooding.

The Ventura County Fire Department supplied sandbags to residents in Simi Valley, where the Easy Fire sweltered over 1,800 acres around Halloween this year. The agency is prompting the public to plan and prepare for possible flooding in the location.

In the Getty Fire burn location, K-rails were lining Sepulveda Boulevard to avoid mud and particles from blocking the road.In cities throughout the Southland, people enjoying their vacation were surprised as they emerged from returning or seeing movies Christmas presents and needed to range from cover from the wind and rain.

“It’s cold. It’s wet,” said Collin Larsh, who was at the Santa Monica pier as he went to town for the Rose Bowl. “It’s quite windy out on the pier. But I’m from Wisconsin, and this is better than that so can’t truly complain.”

The California Highway Patrol said the 5 Freeway through the Grapevine and the 15 Freeway through the Cajon Pass were shut down in both directions after the heavy snow left multiple cars caught.

No quote was readily available for when the interstate may reopen.

The storm brought not only snow, but strong winds, heavy rain and cold temperatures.

Torrential rainstorms prompted the closure of 118 Freeway near the 405 Freeway in Mission Hills. The closure was later on canceled, but not before a number of chauffeurs became stuck after attempting to cross the washed-out road.

The 710 Freeway near Highway 91 in Long Beach turned into a river, with numerous vehicles brought to a standstill as they attempted to barrel through standing water. The flooding prompted a nearly three-hour closure in both directions.
