Russia busts card fraud ring that included an infamous hacker – Engadget

Stroganov was captured back in 2006 and sentenced to six years in jail along with his associate Gerasim Selivanov, however the two were set complimentary after two years. Selivanov was also

arrested as part of today’s bust. While it’s unclear why authorities selected to act now, cybercrime discussion online forum members think Stroganov and crew were apprehended because they dedicated a primary sin in Russia: they targeted individuals within the country. While authorities are regularly tolerant of cybercriminals targeting the United States (and

manage hacks themselves), they might have reached a breaking point with a scammer by themselves soil.

It’s not certain that the hacker will get a long sentence. We wouldn’t count on this hindering other criminal activity rings, even those targeting Russia. However, it could disrupt attempts to swipe your financial info– if just for a bit.
