Jobless claims hit record 3.3 million as coronavirus clobbers labor market – CBS News

Almost 3.3 million people submitted a claim for jobless help in the week ending March 21, an almost fivefold increase over the previous weekly record back in 1982. The number of Americans looking for jobless aid “starkly illustrates the level of the economic destruction that the coronavirus has actually unleashed,” Paul Ashworth of Capital Economics stated in a note to financiers. And as incredible as the figures are, they are most likely to increase in the coming weeks, Ashworth noted.
