But Mr. Buttigieg’s own existential crisis was his inability to appeal to voters of color, both African Americans and Latinos.
Many establishment Democratic authorities have openly fretted about the party’s moderate prospects cannibalizing the center-left vote and making it impossible to coalesce and challenge Mr. Sanders.
Mr. Buttigieg on Monday stated in a town hall event on CNN that he and his fellow moderates had not had any discuss one or more of them leaving. Asked the exact same concern in a post-debate TV interview on Tuesday, Mr. Buttigieg argued that it was he, as the prospect with the 2nd most delegates, whom other moderates need to rally behind.
However except for a ballot uptick after his strong Iowa finish, Mr. Buttigieg’s assistance in approximately national surveys plateaued around 10 percent. That endangered him as the race transferred to the 14 Super Tuesday states, including California and Texas, where most delegates to the National Convention go just to prospects who win 15 percent in congressional districts and statewide.
As Mr. Sanders, in his second governmental run, developed a dedicated following of progressives with a call for political transformation, Mr. Buttigieg tried to use an option: an upbeat message of unity and more ideological versatility, aimed at drawing in moderate Democrats, independents and crossover Republicans. But the pitch, which some found consisted of more platitudes than enthusiasm, was no match at a time of increasing anger left wing that the political establishment has failed to deal with health care, income inequality and climate change.
In his quest to make black assistance, Mr. Buttigieg invested more time visiting South Carolina than any other prospect, spent more on TV ads in the state than any candidates besides Mr. Steyer, and presented a sweeping proposition, called the Douglass Plan, to redress the tradition of bigotry. None of it made much of a damage with African-American citizens who had established a deep rely on Mr. Biden over decades.
Another element may have been the often struggling history of Mr. Buttigieg’s relationship with black residents of South Bend, including his demotion of a black police chief and the shooting last summer of a black local by a white officer. Mr. Buttigieg attempted to counter bad impressions by campaigning with African-American leaders from his hometown who vouched for him.
