The real reason Chris Matthews was fired from MSNBC – New York Post

For two years Maddow built her MSNBC reveal around a real conspiracy theory, that Trump was engaged in some sort of prohibited collusion with Vladimir Putin, and provided one wild speculation after another: that there was a “continuing operation” including Putin pulling strings here, that Putin was in a position to blackmail Trump into remembering troops from the Russian border, that a Trump-directed rocket attack could have been bought by Putin, that the Russians may be in a position to close down our power during winter.

He got fired for doing his task. And what was that job? To represent the non-crazy, “No Kool-Aid for me, thanks” Left on tv, while being entertaining and pointed and goofy. Check out the GQ piece published Friday that obviously got Matthews fired and you’ll keep in mind that the writer, Laura Bassett, had 2 totally unrelated classifications of grievance that she artfully weaved together to create an indictment of Matthews as a sexist.

So Matthews laid it on a bit thick at times. Comparing Bernie Sanders to the Nazis overrunning France? Absurd. Never compare anybody who hasn’t killed a minimum of a million individuals to Hitler. Still, hysterical analogies are exactly what drives viewership of “Hardball” and all the TV and radio programs like it. We tune in to these people hoping they’ll say something entirely bonkers.

Matthews joked that Clinton is “witchy” and a “she-devil” and struck a hesitant tone when quizzing Warren about claims she made in dispute against Mike Bloomberg. All of this is quite part of his job. Matthews attempts to be pointed, intriguing, a bit funny and unforeseeable. Like drive-time radio talkers and other tv pundits, he recognizes that the minute you stop being vibrant, you’re dead. Warren and Clinton are hardly the only pols to whom he has revealed antagonism.

Why do these ladies pretend to be reversed by a roaming compliment? There’s constantly some ulterior intention. Bassett is entirely outright about her real intention: She wanted Matthews fired for the way he interviewed Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren. She thinks Matthews harmed her political favorites, believing (most likely correctly) that when a popular Democrat criticizes such candidates, he indicates other moderate Democrats and centrists that it’s all right to elect another person.

Conclusion: Saying insane things does not get you fired from MSNBC. It’s only saying things that annoys the Left that gets you fired from MSNBC. That was what was important about Matthews– he’s a perfectly credentialed Democrat (Jimmy Carter speechwriter, assistant to Tip O’Neill, person who “felt this adventure going up my leg” when he heard Barack Obama speak) who doesn’t constantly stick to the party line.

To relieve the Bernie Bros, MSNBC (which a couple of weeks back was required by market pressures to reveal it would be employing more Bernie-friendly voices) made Matthews provide a groveling apology for the Nazi joke. This on a network where the comparisons of President Trump to Hitler are so plain that it happened seven times in July alone. Trump had not even taken office prior to Rachel Maddow told Rolling Stone, “Over the previous year I’ve read a lot about what it was like when Hitler initially became chancellor … due to the fact that I believe that’s perhaps where we are.”

One complaint was that Matthews

would compliment women‘s looks. He said of Sarah Palin that there was “something electric” and “very appealing” about her. He informed Erin Burnett, “You’re a knockout.” All real. He made a number of mild compliments to Bassett: “Why have not I fallen in love with you yet?” True, guys shouldn’t talk this method around the office, and couple of people under 50 have actually failed to get the message that this kind of thing makes (some) females uneasy. However Matthews is 70. Old guys flirt with young ladies as a way of informing themselves they’re still in the game. Young women used to be more flexible, to recognize the pathos underlying the impulse and shrug it off. Now they overemphasize their psychological response, pretend that they’re “shaken” or “could not breathe.” Bassett writes that a number of flirty comments from Matthews “weakened my capability to do my task well.” That’s difficult to believe.

It’s possible Matthews did even worse things than we understand about up until now, however as of today, it looks like he’s been unfairly tossed into the same cultural ditch with real predators like Harvey Weinstein. He has been forever smeared as a sex abuser when what truly cost him his task was being disrespectful to Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren.
