President Trump on Tuesday stated the coronavirus is “going to disappear,” duplicating a line he’s said in the past that contradicts his own health experts. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the administration’s leading infectious diseases specialist, has said the lethal virus will not disappear, and the U.S. must be prepared for another wave in fall.
Mr. Trump, making the remarks in an East Room event with companies that turned into an interview, stated a vaccine is looking promising, but he believes the infection is going to go away, and if it does return in a “modified” kind in fall the U.S. will handle it.
CBS News White House correspondent Ben Tracy asked, “Mr. President, you said at the top of your remarks that you feel the worst of the pandemic lags us. However without a treatment, without a vaccine, and states now resuming, how can you be so sure?”
The president reacted: “Well I believe that like other things, we’re going to hopefully we’re going to create a vaccine, you never understand about a vaccine, but significant development has been made. Johnson & & Johnson and Oxford and lots of advantages, you’ve been hearing the exact same things as I do. Incredible development has actually been made, we believe, on a vaccine. You always need to state believe and after that you need to evaluate it, and that takes a time period. However uh, a great deal of motion and a lot of development has actually been made on a vaccine.”
“But I think what occurs is it’s going to disappear,” Mr. Trump added. “This is going to disappear. And whether it comes back in a modified kind in the fall, we’ll have the ability to manage it, we’ll be able to put out spurts, and we’re very prepared to manage it. We’ve learned a lot, we’ve learned a lot about it, the undetectable opponent.”
