Spotify to add 8:46-minute moment of silence to playlists and podcasts in honor of George Floyd – The Verge

“June 2nd is Black Out Tuesday, a day of cumulative disconnect from work indicated to help individuals reflect and come together in support of the Black neighborhood. On this day– and every day– Spotify will support our workers, good friends, partners, artists, and creators in the battle against inequity, bigotry, and oppression,” the business writes in an article.”We are using the power of our platform to stand with Black creators, enhance their voices, and accelerate meaningful conversation and long-needed modification. As an outcome, you’ll discover some modifications on Spotify beginning at 12:01 AM on Tuesday.”

Spotify will add an 8 minute and 46-second minute of silence to select playlists and podcasts on the platform to honor George Floyd. The length of the minute of silence is equal to the amount of time previous Minneapolis law enforcement officer Derek Chauvin

pinned Floyd down by the neck with his knee, resulting in Floyd’s death and sparking universal protest and presentations in United States cities and around the world.

In addition to the minute of silence, Spotify says it will pause all social networks publication, change heading podcast and playlist images and logo designs with a blacked out image, and more prominently promote black artists and podcasters with specifically curated playlists and its existing Black History is Now hub. The company is also matching monetary donations made by workers to companies battling bigotry and oppression.

Spotify’s action becomes part of a more comprehensive movement in the music industry called Blackout Tuesday designed to oppose cops violence and racism. A number of record labels are getting involved following a call to action from Atlanta Records marketing chief Jamila Thomas and previous Atlantic staff member Brianna Agyemang that began with the hashtag #TheShowMustBePaused. ViacomCBS is likewise taking part in a blackout lasting 8 minutes and 46 seconds throughout its network and cable television channels beginning 5PM ET on Monday.
