It almost appears like astronomers are in a race to reveal the most significant black holes they can find . Most recently, a team of German astronomers claimed to have found a great void 40 billion times the mass of the Sun. What if there are likewise black holes many magnitudes smaller sized? In a study released today in the prominent journal Science, a team of astronomers from Ohio State University claim to have found an item that comes from a
a statement. If confirmed, existing theories would have to take into account a new class of great void – forcing us to reconsider how we understand the way stars and other type of celestial objects are born and die.Thompson and his team were puzzled by the huge gap between the size of the most significant neutron stars – exceptionally thick and relatively small stars that form after bigger stars implode after a supernova – and the smallest black holes we understand of.
Neutron stars are fairly little – 2 to 3 times the mass of the Sun – but stars any bigger than that tend to collapse in on themselves and form black holes.
Their smoking cigarettes weapon: a giant red star that was orbiting something that at very first seemed too little to be a black hole in the Milky Way, but was much larger than the neutron stars we understand of.
Their finding really did turn out to be a low-mass black hole, and it was just 3.3 times the mass of the Sun – generally the black holes we’ve discovered in the past are at least 5 times the Sun’s mass or
much, much larger. The discovery could redefine the way we look at the life cycle of a star.“If we could reveal a brand-new population of black holes, it would inform us more about which stars take off, which don’t, which form great voids, which form neutron stars,” said Thompson. “It opens a brand-new area of study.”
