Shuri Castle was the seat of the kings of Ryukyu for more than 400 years.
The castle was completely ruined throughout the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, and reconstruction work was just finished in the early 1990s. The entire region was substantially damaged during World War I I, when Shuri Castle acted as the regional headquarters for the Imperial Japanese Army.
People in the location are being left, stated a police representative, though it is unclear the number of evacuees there are or how big the fire is.
The blaze began near the main hall of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, according to the fire department in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture,
Japan’s nationwide broadcaster NHK reported.
