‘Succession’: Jesse Armstrong on the Season Finale’s Stunning Twist – The New York Times

You understand, me and Jeremy talk a lot, and at a particular point, yeah, he did. Since, you know, his preparation for his performance and his engagement with the character is really extremely deep. It didn’t feel like a dereliction of responsibility not to lay it all out from the very beginning, but at a particular point it did feel like he needs to understand where he was going. I wanted to do it on huge screens at Shiv’s wedding, and then one of our writers, Jon Brown, came into the writers’ space having actually been away for a few days, and was like: “You’ve all gone completely crazy. If you get those things right, they have that kind of queasy sense we understand so well from the world right now.

You put Jeremy Strong through the wringer this season with Kendall’s arc. Did he a minimum of have the relief of understanding where the character was going to land?

You know, me and Jeremy yap, and at a particular point, yeah, he did. Because, you know, his preparation for his performance and his engagement with the character is truly extraordinarily deep. It didn’t feel like a dereliction of task not to lay everything out from the very start, but at a particular point it did feel like he needs to understand where he was going. Yeah, we went over that stuff before the episode was written.

When did he learn he was going to get to rap?

Prior to the read-through! [Laughs.] No, I really can’t keep in mind when. We clearly discussed how it should work, and I think we both had the same sensation, that it might be that other individuals discovered it ridiculous, but that Kendall himself should not. The lyrics, the music, the things around it ought to be as good as somebody like him must be able to accomplish. Which is quite good!

Did it surprise you how much the rap took off on social media? Do you take note of any of that?

A lot of that actually isn’t beneficial to have in your head. There’s always a few bits in each season where we think, “Well, tonally, I think we got it right.” I keep in mind having the rocket explode in the very first season’s finale. I wanted to do it on huge screens at Shiv’s wedding event, and then one of our writers, Jon Brown, came into the writers’ space having been away for a couple of days, and was like: “You’ve all gone completely crazy. It’s going to destroy the program.” [Laughs.] We wound up having it on Roman’s phone, which was rather a better way.

Likewise, I remember suggesting the rap and there being a specific, like, “Yeah, right … This might be the end of the program that we’ve all dealt with so hard.” But if you get those things right, they have that type of queasy sense we understand so well from the world right now. That “Am I seeing what I think I’m seeing?” feeling.
